April 11 - 14

Hey y'all lets get building Welcome grade 6 construction students, we have done our safety unit and are finishing up our Logo's.  The next stage is to design and build a wooden toy.  We are just getting started coming with lots of ideas.  Grade 7 - 9 construction students have worked through developing their ideas on paper and are now ready to begin the hard work of developing our skills while creating our projects. It can be stressful at times trying to make the materials do what we want, but this is a healthy part of learning new skills.  We will persevere through design challenges and skill building to bring our collective visions to life. Over the remaining weeks we will be almost entirely engaging in hands on activities. It is an exciting time for me to see all the students creative ideas begin to take physical shape.  Grade 9 ELectrotechnology students are all deeply involved in the creative process.  Many teams have built, tested, modified and redesigned their robots sev

March 14 -18

I hope everyone had a good long weekend! Grade 6 Construction students were working hard to complete their building phase of their projects so that they can can complete their wooden toys before the end of term and spring break.  It was pandemonium.  Grade 7 to 9 Construction students were working hard to complete the planning phase of their project and calculate their materials  so that they may start building after spring break. We are getting excited to begin the building phase of our projects.  Grade 9 Electrotechnology Students have officially started creating robots with their new teams complete the Ultimate Battle Bot Challenge Extravaganza!!! There first task is to autonomously escape a trap to join the competition.  Next, teams will be rewarded points for popping balloons in the play area and finally teams will be given bonus points re-entering the starting area.

March 7-10

Updates: Grade 6 Construction students are completing their plans for their wooden toys so that they may begin building as early as possible.  Many have already begun the building phase. Next week all students will begin building to ensure completion before term change.  Grade 7 to 9 Construction students are working hard to complete their ideation and move on to create an orthographic projection.  They may also be working through the skill building modules in preparation for beginning their woodworking projects. Grade 9 Electrotechnology We have wrapped up our first robotics challenge.  Each team student was able to create robots that performed the task some of the time. Those that stood out were able to create robots that could reliably perform the task under a variety of circumstances. Well done!

January 24 -28 Last Week of the Semester

During this last week of the semester we are working to complete projects and even take on some new small projects.  This first semester has been a wonderful experience teaching at Tom Baines School and I will miss seeing all of my students in my class, but I will see in the halls.    The mark cut off for this reporting period has passed, only assignments that were handed in prior to last Friday will be marked and entered into power school. Grade 6 students in my class this term will receive a mark and comment on the next reporting period. Thanks for the great Semester!

January 17 - 22

Grade 6  There are only 2 weeks left of construction.  Most students have completed their plans for their wood project and are working to gather materials and layout their cuts. All students should have completed the handsaw and abrasive tools certification before starting their project.  Next we will be working on completing their projects until the end of the term. Grade 7-9 This semester is coming to a close on Jan. 28, all students are asked to make sure all assignments are due this week.  SketchUp assignments on google classroom can be completed at home with any desktop or laptop.  The video was created with PC's in mind so MAC users need to experiment with control, option and command keys when following the videos.  Pro tip: right click on a PC is control+click on MAC default settings. If you are isolating or quarantining and you are well enough to work, please take the time to complete the SketchUp assignment on Google classroom.
